Summary
This book is the missing link in the retirement planning puzzle.
Transition to Retirement: The Uncharted Course reveals what there is to learn about that crucial transitional phase from when you leave your job to when you feel significantly engaged in the life of retirement. It is not about finances or lifestyle; it is about you – the person behind the work title, name-tag or job description and how to discover who you are or will be outside of your job.
While acknowledging that we have all been through phases of transition in our lives, and that we have many personal coping skills, the authors point out that this time there is an added extra: age. Written by today’s retirees for today’s retirees, the authors use their own retirement experiences, combined with extensive research and development to help others become aware of some of the challenges that people face early on in retirement. The book is based on the popular workshop of the same name, one in a series of retirement planning workshops conducted by the authors.
Comment
The authors used a nautical theme to introduce the phases of the transition from work to retirement. There is humour, honesty, enlightenment, encouragement, joy, enthusiasm, excitement and a chance to see retirement through new eyes. It is gender neutral and designed to appeal to a broad audience. “Aids to Navigation” at the end of each chapter, comment on the significant aspects and essence of the chapter. Throughout the book are italicized side-bar comments, questions and ideas pertinent to the contemplation of life after the workplace. Recommended books are well critiqued and useful.
