Summary
A Morning to Polish and Keep is a story about a family and their last fishing trip of the year. Amy, about ten years of age, hooks and struggles to land a large salmon. Unfortunately, she loses the fish when she is distracted by a sighting of a pod of orca whales passing close by their boat. Amy and her family experience a wonderful morning despite this initial bad luck, because the family members support and encourage each other. This caring aspect of the family contributes to the “specialness” of the last fishing trip of the summer.
Comment
A Morning to Polish and Keep could be used as an integral part of a larger thematic unit such as a study of orcas, or simply as a book that students will enjoy. It would be a valuable addition to a seashore unit or a medium for exploring family issues. The illustrations are superb and can be used as a lead-in to more specific studies about watercolours and geographic locations.
